UMI ISHIHARA 石原 海

I am a London and Tokyo based artist and filmmaker.

I create experimental narrative films that connect personal memories with social realities, focusing on the lived histories of marginalised communities. Being raised by parents working in nightclubs and the free-rave scene in Japan has shaped my focus on portraying communities existing outside the dominant social structure. I often collaborate with non-professional actors, local residents and people from my immediate surroundings. This unscripted, grassroots experience made me want to create cinema depicting lives that unfold outside of conventional society.

My work have been shown and screened in museums and film festivals worldwide, including ICA London, BFI Southbank, The Centre Pompidou, South London Gallery, International Film Festival Rotterdam, CPH:DOC, The National Museum of Art Osaka, Fukuoka Art Museum and Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. I am selected Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2019 and Awarded GQ Global Creativity Awards 2024. Also directed work broadcasts on the BBC4 and Amazon Prime Original.

I am selected for the 2026 Locarno Filmmakers Academy and CHANEL X BIFF Asian Film Academy.

In 2022, I founded the art platform Flatline City to explore new forms of community emerging at the intersection of education, performance and rave.

ロンドンと北九州を拠点にする映画監督／アーティスト。

個人の記憶と社会問題を交差させ、周縁化された人々やコミュニティの生活史を記録する映像を手がける。フィクションとノンフィクションを織り混ぜながら、身近な人々や地域住民など、プロの役者ではない生活者たちと共に制作を行なっている。2022年に、教育と音楽と美術が交差するコミュニティの可能性を追求するためのアートプラットフォーム「水平都市」を発足。

作品は東京都写真美術館、国立国際美術館、福岡市美術館、ポンピドゥー・センター（パリ）、ICA ロンドン（ロンドン）、BFI サウスバンク（ロンドン）、サウスロンドン・ギャラリー（ロンドン）、ルイ・ヴィトン財団美術館（パリ）、ロッテルダム国際映画祭（ロッテルダム）、ロカルノ映画祭（ロカルノ）CPH:DOC（コペンハーゲン）など、国際的に上映・展示されている。

近年の主な個展に、「Nocturnal Melody」（Gasworks、ロンドン、2026年）、「激雷」（Gallery 舞台裏、東京、2024年）、「重力の光」（資生堂ギャラリー、東京、2021年）など。主なグループ展に「あらがう」（福岡市美術館、福岡、2024年）、「Home Sweet Home」(国立国際美術館、大阪、2023年)、「Coming of Age」（Foundation Luis Vuitton、パリ、2022年）「第14回 恵比寿映像祭」（東京都写真美術館、東京、2022年）「Bloomberg New Contemporaries」(South London Gallery、ロンドン、2019年) などがある。

2023年からポーラ美術振興財団、吉野石膏美術振興財団の助成を受けて渡英。2019年にはBBC4及びBFIのコミッションとして『狂気の管理人』を制作、BBCにて放映された。

2026年、Locarno Film Festival Filmmakers Academy、CHANEL X BIFF アジアン・フィルム・アカデミーに選出。2015年に現代芸術振興財団 （CAF賞）岩渕貞哉賞を受賞、2019年にBloomberg New Contemporaries選出、『ガーデンアパート』『忘却の先駆者』がロッテルダム国際映画祭 Bright Future部門に同時選出。2021年に資生堂アートエッグ入選、2024年にGQ グローバル・クリエイティブ・アワードを受賞。
